Comments:
Murphy struck early with the first diddle. We got 6" of snow the night before
the contest start, and before things changed over to snow we got about .5" of
freezing rain and falling "slush". My D4 rotatable dipole was loaded a few
inches thick with snow and frozen slush that remained on the antenna and feed
point until the sun finally came out late Saturday afternoon. Damage was
already done. When I tuned up for the first time Friday night, I damaged the RF
choke at the feed point of the D4. It was toast on all four bands. Ended up
using the 80m dipole at 35' on 40m through an MFJ versa tuner. There was enough
ice and snow on the 80m feed point until Saturday afternoon, that the SWR
movements was driving the internal tuner on the Pro 3 crazy! I struggled S&Ping
for the 5.5 hours I played. Got a lot of NR??? sent back to me along with AGN??
I was really hoping to get a long Friday night in and a decent late Saturday
night/Sunday morning in of operating as Saturday was spent getting prepared for
a Chinese New Year Dinner that my XYL and I host every year. That was why I
chose to do a single band 40m. The dinner went well, the RTTY WPX, not so well
:( Better luck next year!
Icom Pro 3 50~100 watts, SWR 1.5:1~5:1 80m dipole at 35' broadside NE/SW
