Comments:
What a difference a year makes. After super conditions last year I guess it
averaged out this year. At least things recovered a bit on Sunday afternoon. I
managed to beat my 2011 score but I'm way below 2012.
I've generally been pretty lucky to avoid "Murphy" in contests but he
caught up with me this year. I had to delay starting an hour due to a thunder
storm in progress at the beginning of the contest. I had to shut down again
Saturday morning with another thunderstorm just as the high bands were opening.
The wind blew something loose on my top 20 meter yagi so I had to go with a
single one. A problem with my relay control limited access to some antennas
with the second radio. And finally a power supply blew Saturday evening.
Fortunately it did no damage to the radio and I was able to swap it out and get
back on the air in about ten minutes. All things considered I don't think the
problems hurt my score much - certainly not like the high line noise I had in
ARRL DX Phone (which went away as mysteriously as it came).
I do like the 36 hour limit for single ops in this contest. It is tough enough
sitting at the radio that long over a weekend but sure beats 40+. And as a
result of the time limit, shutting down for the thunderstorms did not hurt my
score significantly.
