Comments:
Compared with the last week or two, conditions were down, but
still better than most contest weekends. Seemed like less
activity from Latin America, which was a staple on 10 & 15
aftenoons in the low sunspot years.
Got the 20/40 prop pitch going again. During the big wind
outbreak during SS Phone, the antennas turned 90 degrees.
But, neither of the booms moved on the mast, and the 3/8"
bolt pinning the mast was still intact, too. Somehow,
wind turned the gearbox while the rotor was not turning
so the indicator was 90 degrees off.
Had problem with one Orion during CQWW SSB with power output
that was intermittant. So, put in the backup OMNI VI before
SS. The Omni still sounds and works great! But, my other
Orion developed problems during this weekend, with occasional
ear-shattering pops when initially keying the transmitter.
Then, about 1600z Sunday, the rig rebooted when trying to
transmit. So, I pulled that Orion from its slot and put the
Orion with the intermittant transmit in its place. Lost
about 30 minutes, but still had a second rig for chasing
stations on the second radio. I ran on the Omni VI and had
no further hardware problems during the contest.
Heard no Europeans on 160 the first night, worked a few the
second and heard a few more. Never heard any KH6/KL7 on 160,
and only one KH6 on 80. Heard N5AW running JAs on 40,
considered myself luck to get 3 over 2 nights S&P on 40.
I marvel at Marvin working 6 JAs on 160 with LP!
Had a lot of fun. Now, to use the next couple of months
to figure out the rig problems.
