Comments:
Great to have our old friend 10 Meters back for a brief visit this year. We
won't likely get such good condx for another ~8 years.
With a continuing noise problem, I chose to go Low Power this time. That had
the benefit of being able to hear better on the 2nd rx through my tx signal, so
I made lots more QSOs on the 2nd rig this year than last year on the 2nd VFO.
After the first day, still needed 7 states, all in the medium distance range
that normally would be covered by E-skip openings. But we had no such Es
clouds floating around that we benefited from. One by one, the states were
found on Sunday, except for elusive KS.
KS? Is that a fact? Yes, KS!
Friday evening was frustrating as it was obvious that the band was open, but
just not for us in FL. Ended the evening with just 66 QSOs and only one
answered CQ.
Saturday was terrific with EU workable before our sunrise and available into
our afternoon. The Asian opening was even better, with lots of JAs calling in,
plus DU and BV to sweeten the pot.
Just after 01Z, the band sharply closed, with the excption of KH6. Worked 4
new KH6s before the band really closed. 2 hours later, the PYs were back in,
but that yielded exactly one new QSO here.
I've operated the 10M Test every year since 1997 and I'm sure that this was the
lowest number of QSOs made in the evenings. (One year, we even had more QSOs in
darkness than in light thanks to ample Es.)
With the elevated K-index (4 at one point) appearing on Saturday afternoon, the
band couldn't sustain the same levels and Sunday was a watered-down version of
Saturday.
Never even tried the Long Path to SE Asia in the morning with all the EU
excitement. Heard XW0YJY and several BAs on Saturday evening SP and wonder if
they were equally strong or stronger on the LP in the mornings. The pileups on
the LP stuff can be tough to break, especially with low power, so I opted not to
check and be enticed.
Other mults heard and not worked: Three XE states (AGS, EMX, TAM), T48LT and
T40HE (just couldn't muster enough backscatter signal to raise them), plus
CU2JT (heard working N9RV/7 with #9).
Thanks to VP5CW and ZF1A for digging me out of the noise, but never heard other
close-by mults reported to be on - VP2V and my friends in HI3.
Lots of activity from rarer states and provinces - thanks for getting on,
folks. And thanks to the ones that were the only QSO in a state - amazing to
have only one MO and OK. After hearing K5YAA again, I briefly toyed with
the idea of asking Jerry to take the mobile up to nearby KS, but figured that
was a bit much!
Fascinating propagation at times
- lots of echoes were prevalent, sometimes so severe as to make copying the
callsign impossible
- worked CN3A by beaming south (not audible anywhere to the east)
- handful of scatter QSOs (beam in the same direction that they are beaming
instead of directly at them)
- once again, not even close to a QSO using meteor pings
- TX is often the most consistently heard state, but not this time
- without Es, the chart below shows where our signal lands - not in the
populated parts of the east for the most part, but lots of W7/0 to go with the
6s. (Thanks to the MWA, AOCC and GMCC for getting so many stations on from MN,
AZ and CO.) More KL7s than OH, IL and VA.
Congrats to WA1Z for a fine LP score with a small station. Kudos to K8NZ for
piloting the K8AZ super-station to an impressive total.
Once again, the Florida Contest Group was out in force. We hope nobody missed
FL.
Thanks for all the QSOs. Have a wonderful holiday season.
