This year's action definitely started more slowly than last
year. Nothing on 10 and slow on 15 to start, while last year
both bands yielded goog DX on bath bands. So, I thought I'd
check things out on 160. Found bad audio feedback when
transmitting on either rig. (Had only checked things with
CW in the days leading up to the contest). The problem was
not RF induced (happened with only 1 watt out into dummy
load). Seems to be some ground loop problem. Temporary Fix:
use hand microphone on 160 - no DVK there. Permanent Fix?
[Note: the contest recording requirement tied together
the audio returns from the radios, undoing the good from
isolation transformers on both RX and TX inputs.......]
I noted on the NG3K page that IH9A was ready for the big
times on 160m, with 4 square and beverages. He peaked
at least 20 to 30 dB over the noise at 0100z Sunday morning,
but didn't answer my frantic calls; didn't hear any other
US callers at the time and he wasn't answering too many
EU stations, either. Bummer.
A second problem was found whereby the DX Doubler is not
working properly with the TR4W, a problem noted this past
spring and summer, and forgotten about in the interim.
They worked together rock solid for many years, and the
lack of the DXDoubler PTT function was a pain throughout
the contest.
I did work S0S on two bands for an all-time-new-one. It's
great how the DXing gets better at the end of the contest.
