First congratulations to Dan N6MJ/ZF2MJ!
Contesting is really fun!
From time to time there are game changers.
First we had RUN+S&P
The key skill here (besides being able to run) is to know when to stop the run
to look for multipliers to edge out competition.
Then we had SO2R
The key skill here is velocity of S&P, looking for mults with the second
radio while running all the time
And now we have dual CQ, although I think it is more appropriate to call it
2BSIQ (Two bands Synchronized Interleave QSOs)
The key skill here synchronization, to be able to run nonstop on two bands
For the last 3 months I was preparing CQWW CW 2015. The training involved two
aspects:
>> The operating
>>The hardware/logging.
The easy part was training the operating.
I set-up two computers with MorseRunner. It is incredibly easy to do it. I did
240 sessions of 5 minutes each. That was 20 hours on the simulator. Lowest rate
obtained was 312 QSO/Hour, highest rate was 420 QSO/Hour with average rate of
375 QSOs/hours. I made a record on an Excel spreadsheet of the result of each
session and the distribution of the rates follows a “normal distribution”.
Going from 420 QSOs/Hour to 312 QSOs/hour (with a constant flow of calls from
Morserunner) is a function of synchronization of QSO pairs in the two bands for
each “moment”. There are some “little” secrets in there to handle out of
synchronization….
The second part was the hardware/logging.
This was the difficult part and in the end what turned out to be a huge
mistake.
I debated myself a lot if I could use just one computer with Win-Test and one
SO2R box (Micro-ham U2R), instead of two computers and additional hardware.
Using one computer with Win-Test and U2R, did not required additional hardware
to control headphones audio, and was more “slick” but required building
Win-Test scripts to automatically control TX. I did the scripting, but did not
fully took into account that U2R relays add 500-600 milliseconds delay in the
process for each TX focus change. You add that to 9000 * 2 and…. Of course,
only now I realize this….
When I arrived in Madeira and did the first QSOs Thursday afternoon, even with
a constant flow of calls on the two radios, the maximum rate was not 420, like
I obtained with Morserunner, but was “only” 300. But by then it was too
late to change the set up.
The rest is history - “only” 8910 QSOs
Dual CQ or 2BSIQ (Two Bands Synchronized Interleaved QSOs) as I think we should
call this mode is lots of fun, although there is no strategic multiplier
“decision making” like in SO2R. You just sit in there “spraying” your
signals to different directions hoping all the DX call you, and only rely on
“Passing” to increase a little bit the multiplier count. Of course being
the only DX in the country helps a bit.
Also it is very easy to predict what the final multiplier number will be. You
RUN for 48 hours, and with this type of rates, it is always better, score wise,
to RUN than to look for mults like in SO2R.
I determined a multiplier function to QSOs. This was based in EF8M (UA5C) 2012
operation that run for 48 hours nonstop (but only one radio).
Multipliers = -4*10^-6*QSO^2+0.1051*QSO+25.03
CR3OO had 8910, the function predicts 644 multipliers and I had 625
ZF2MJ had 10223 QSOs, the function predicts 681 and he had 698
You can’t go wrong.
Also another interesting story is that the CW World record now does not depend
anymore on solar flux maximum to be broken. All you need is 9500 QSOs…..
