Comments:
I went into this one with rather low expectations " not feeling great due
to a bad case of allergies, solar cycle on the decline and disturbed conditions
predicted. I got off to a poor start then some audio issues surfaced in the
second hour requiring reprogramming of my DVK. By the time I quit for a few
hours sleep at 0900 I was down 250 QSOs from my 2015 results. Back at it after
3 hours sleep and, although doing a little better, by 2100 UTC I was 380 behind
last year. Then things began to improve beginning with a great JA/Asia run on 15
meters. Later I worked three Europeans on 160 - difficult to do from Texas on
SSB with low power. Then I was amazed to get a great 30 minute run of Europeans
on 40 meters before I lost my run frequency. I was exhausted though after
struggling to pull those folks out of the noise and QRM so I packed it in for
another 3 hours of sleep. By now though had pulled to within 300 Q's of 2015.
When I got back on the radio at 1245 20 meters was wide open and 15 wasn't far
behind - should have gotten up a little earlier! By 1430, much to my surprise,
ten meters was showing signs of a decent opening to Europe. Finding a good run
frequency was difficult. The skip was so long I could not hear most US
stations. I was able to piece together several short runs though and ended up
with 182 Europeans on ten - more than I worked on 40 or 20 (but well below the
507 in 2015). The opening was widespread - SM, OH, DL, I, G, etc but activity
level seemed low. Highlight was working I5KAP who was running only 500 mw! By
mid-afternoon conditions seemed to deteriorate. Although EA and CT were still
coming through on 10, Europe was weak on 20 and many signals were watery. After
the European opening I was hoping ten would open to JA but no such luck and the
last three hours were a struggle as usually seems to be the case. I ended up
with 282 less contacts but 7 more multipliers than 2015. That was much better
than I thought I would do after the first evening but also feel I should have
done better. I did not spend enough time on 20 meters but that is a really
tough band on SSB and not much fun with low power from here. Putting in a few
less hours and getting a little more sleep made the contest enjoyable and
probably did not hurt the score very much. Some statistics below for anyone
interested. - Marv N5AW
