Comments:
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC.
For July 2016 IARU, operators were N3UM and W3GB. Forecast said
propagation best to EU on 20 CW Sat. morning, 20 SSB Sat.
afternoon, and 40 CW after dark, with 15 m. never good. So
we stayed on 20 CW 12-19Z, both running and S&P. Rates were
modest, and many answering our CQs were Zone 8 1-pointers.
Best CW hour on 20 CW was 17-18 Z: 75 Qs, 163 pts.
>From 19-2120 Z we did 20 USB with some success: best SSB hr.
126 pts. 20-21 Z. A 2 hr. supper break, then good 20 m. SSB
and CW rates. Great rates on 40 CW starting ~O1 Z: 56 Q/hr
and 180 pts/hr avg. for 2.4 hrs, run and S&P. Tried 80, too
slow to pursue.
We were glad to get 460 Qs in 13.3 hr vs 411 Qs in 15.5 hr.
in 2015, UNTIL we compared final scores: 113 K this year,
178 K last year! QSO points within 2.5%. Problem was MULTS:
11 fewer Zones and 34 fewer HQ stations this year. Lack of
15 m. this year was about half the problem. The rest: we
shoulda spent more time on 40 m. Mults on 20 m. were ~ equal
both years. Hindsight is always 20:20.
