Comments:
My focus was 40m, but I also worked 80-10m since I had the opportunity. The 40m
experience was more difficult this year. I was hearing stations at s 15-20db
and sometimes they heard me and sometimes they didn't...even in the clear or in
the pileups. I had a mix of calling some stations many times and then running up
and down the band make one call to every station and working those who reply...
I also found that working the stations who were running between 7.050-7.125 who
were listening in our phone band very successful... There were only a few
stations calling these guys... I did hear a few US guys calling them out of our
phone band which is usual... 15m was the best daytime band for me... 20m was
just crazy. I produced quite a bit of QRM in the house during this race (phone
contest)... I don't use a voice keyer, so every call was different and was from
my vocals... So the volume of my calls got louder and faster as I tried to break
through the piles. This was a problem workng 40m only... I'll do much better
during the CQWW CW! Saturday night on 40m was just like Friday... large
pileups and weaker sigs... I did experience the rate of 30-33 when I worked
15, but not on 40m... I closed down when the fam went to bed around 11:30 pm. I
did switch between my 80/40 windmill dipole at 10' and my 40m dipole at 27 feet.
There was a definite improvement with DX with the higher dipole. I used my
IC-751 with $6 computer headset and all worked just fine. I ended-up missing my
goals on 40m, but i had a great experience on 15m and overall it was a wonderful
stressbuster. I can't wait until the CW contest. I hope everyone else enjoyed
the 2017 CQWW SSB... Go Swamp Foxes!
