Comments:

It has been fun, almost.

I was eager to take part to CQWW CW and wanted to be active in the SOAB LP
Classic category. I planned on/off strategies and reviewed older logs to meet
my goals. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks prior to the contest, due to a
number of issues (weather, work, family) I found myself unable to get the
station ready for an all band entry (and it's my favorite band anyway). I was
forced to divert to a single band category. 15m seemed the best choice. It
would have allowed me some rest during the nights and some fun during the
openings (if it were to open).

One week before the contest I managed to put up a 2 element vertical moxon
fixed towards the US and a 3 elements on a 5m high pole. The latter without a
proper rotor. I would have turned it by hand running in and out of the
station.

On friday evening before the contest I finally set up and wired the station
adding a raspberry pi powered RTL-SDR panadapter to the mix.

On day 1 I woke up at 5AM local and flipped the switch. My SOSB 15 LP adventure
started. For a few seconds.

After a couple of CQs on an empty band the radio switched off and didn't take a
degree in engineering to assess that the power supply failed. Was almost going
to give up since I had no spare PSU when I remembered to have an old modded 12V
PSU I could try.

Hooked everything up and the radio switched on. Unfortunately the power supply
was not capable of handling the full power of the radio and at 10-12W it would
cause a shutdown of the system. Oh well, lowered the power to 5W and started
over again. QRP this time.

Conditions were strange to say the least. Very few signals (heard and worked)
from Russia/Asia and luckily a great opening towards the US that litterally
saved my day. At the end of the first shift I found myself analyzing my log and
discovering that I missed lots of usually easy multipliers (LU, CX, P4, PJ2-4,
V2, E2, NH2...). Some of them were luckily heard and worked on day 2. Some
other has never been heard. Maybe if I were assisted I could have found them.

Day 2 was worse. Altough working some interesting stations (RI1ANC wow!),
conditions seemed worse than day 1. Weather didn't cooperate either and between
rain and heavy wind I found myself struggling in copying signals. Running
outside the station to bear the antenna towards a given direction with a -2C
and rainy wx is definitely not fun. It's even worse if the wind is so strong
that, while you run back towards your operating chair after beaming the
antenna, the wind changed its bearing an infinite number of times towards all
directions except the one you actually need it to be.

Luckily at 11AM local the wind ceased as well as the useless wrestling I was
enacting against it.

The panadapter (IF tap feeding an SDR) I built performed amazingly. It is way
more useful to actually see the traces of the stations on the waterfall than
using some sort of assistance that "spots" you a station on a given
frequency but you might not receive it.

Getting to the end of the contest has been an hard work. Both frustrating and
exausting. In the end I was much disappointed with everything.

On monday morning I disassembled all the antennas clearing the garden from all
the wires and cables. While doing so I had the possibility to think about the
contest with a slightly different approach. Operating "field day
style" is an hard work indeed. Even for a single band entry only. Even a
single contact would have been a nice accomplishment and my final result was
something to be proud of, nonetheless.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to work me and to read this - probably
uninteresting - report till here.

Will probably be QRX for a while to take care of other things but can't wait
till the next contest.

RTX: FT-950 @ 5W
Ant: 2el vertical Moxon towards US
Ant: 3el beam @ 5m of height
