Comments:
An untimely arrival of a CME and solar wind seemed to plague conditions
throughout the contest. 40 meter signals overall seemed weaker than the typical
bone crushing loudness of the monster EU stations. The post EU sunrise opening
on 40 was MIA Saturday morning but it did happen Sunday morning. I had planned
to take a quick 30 minute nap Sunday morning but the opening took precedence so
it was a true 48 hour non stop operation.
A brief opening Saturday morning to EU on 15 meters accounted for the majority
of the contacts on that band. 15 was a tease on Sunday and it was never
runnable to Europe.
160, 80, and 20 were all outstanding.
I gave it everything I had and the station was flawless. After several
amplifier problems from the last contest season, Scott, WU2X, implemented
protections to enable us to continue to use a single amplifier during serious
two radio operations. It appears that the fixes have worked as the single
amplifier got a heavy workout both with dual CQing and traditional SO2R this
weekend.
A big shout out to the N1MM+ crew. Their program is just amazing and the
support can't be beat. It's amazing to consider all of the time that everyone
involved with that software donates to a free program for the contesting
community.
Congratulations to Chris, KL9A (KM7W), on an outstanding performance! The
formula of a great operator from a great location is a tough one to beat.
The contesting sport is a weird experience. I always look forward to a big
contest. It's fun to do the log analysis, read past 3830 reports, and put in
hours of time training for the big event. However as the clock ticks closer to
0000z I become increasingly reluctant to want to play. There is something about
the dedication of 48 hours straight to an activity that in no way mirrors the
real world that has my mind screaming don't do this. It's seems almost
incomprehensible to sit in a chair for two days straight and just focus on a
singular task. As much as my mind fights the start of the contest though it
also fights the end of the contest. Invariably the previous 48 hours become a
blur and my mind is wondering how that went by so quickly. The minds perception
of time, and just plain ole experience with doing 48 hours straight, each play a
role in how a full 48 hour event is handled.
Thanks to Tariq and Scott for their continued pursuit of station excellence.
Trying to be the loudest signal on all bands from New York is a challenge but
they are getting closer to achieving that dream. I wonder how that monster 5
element 40 meter K5GO beam would play in upstate NY? Perhaps it should be
converted into an 80 meter Yagi. That might make some noise!
