Comments:

Well, I didn't get skunked this year, as has happened in the past, and thank
goodness for the opening on Sunday. Saturday afternoon and evening were
painful. I finished Saturday with a total of 4 QSOs. Got to the rig this morning
about 1330Z and there were blips on the P3 other than the usual local QRN.
E-skip was back, and this time it was to the east. Worked mostly FT-8, but did
manage 27 CW contacts, one of which was local, so I managed to work my own grid
for the first time in many years. Spent a great deal of time flipping back and
forth between the "standard" FT-8 mode and the "NA Contest"
mode, when I was (if you want to call it that) running. Big pain. The NA
Contest Mode works fine, when both parties use it. When only one end does, lots
of wasted repeats. The reflective "cloud" must have been tethered
somewhere over eastern Kansas for most of the day. I worked nothing closer than
St. Louis. I probably worked every possible grid in Illinois, Indiana,
Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio with a sprinkling of east coast thrown in. I worked
absolutely nothing to the north, west or south. I pointed the Moxon towards
DM33/43 and heard absolutely nothing but QRN. Last week, there was a pipeline
between Casper and the San Diego area three or four nights in a row. Nil this
weekend. I made a single meteor scatter QSO with a station in Washington
Saturday afternoon. That was my only west coast QSO. I had planned on working
CW, SSB and FT-8. Well, I did make those 27 CW QSOs but zero SSB. The rest
were FT-8. I looked and I looked and never heard a single sideband signal. CW
didn't get busy until late this afternoon, so I stayed where the points were.
All-in-all, I can't complain. I might not win the Wyoming section this year,
like I usually do, because 3 of my four Saturday QSOs were with other Wyoming
guys and at least two others were active. However, this was my all-time best
score for the June ARRL VHF contest. Go Outlaws!
