Comments:
Poor conditions mediocre antennas and lack of sleep put a damper on things
The forecast for really bad WX overnite and an early ferry schedule made the
decision to pull the plug early seem like a good idea. It turned out to be the
best decision of the operation as at 5am local the bad wx rolled in with a
spectacular light and sound show. Thunder lightning then torrential rain for
about 3 hours. Really glad I had taken down antennas early!
Radio conditions at start seemed so poor I first thought either antennas or
radio was broken. All signals were faint and not enough patience to grind so
1200z to 1600z were mostly spent enjoying a walk along beach at low tide.
Somewhat better after 1600Z but signals still weak. Unable to run on SSB even
local callers not hearing.
Radio conditions seemed very poor not helped by the antenna situation. Trip to
island was enjoyable only marred by poor planning on the reservations for the
boat ride. The wx was mild and dry on arrival Friday and most of Saturday with
the many storms either moving offshore or over the mainland.
Very disappointing from standpoint of number of Q's logged. Conditions seemed
much better just 1 month prior using much the same setup from Carolina Beach for
ARRL FD.
