K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. N3UM,
W3GB, and guest op Zory KB3VQC did M2 in the 8/18 NAQP SSB.
Zory came here since WA3EKL where he usually operates was dark.
With 3 ops we enjoyed being able to take meal and rest breaks
and not lose any Qs.
Conditions were bad, weak signals on 20m. and loud QRN from
T-storms near and far, S3 to S5 on 40m. and S9+ on 80m.
From 18-19Z we ran on 40m. but got just 28 Qs, then only 14 Qs
on 40 from 19-20Z. It was worse on 20m, sigs weak, never could
run; 18 Qs 18-19Z, 7 from 19-20Z, and just 3 Qs later. KS was
our furthest west on 20 except for one weak AZ QSO. From 20-23Z,
80, 40, and 20m. were all poor: we got just 60 QS total in 3
hours! But, the next 3 hrs. 23-02Z were good, 172 Qs total on 80
and 40 m. Made some runs on 80m, but all were brief, 20 or fewer
QSOs. Last 2 hr. were ~OK on 80 and 40m, 75 total Qs, but then
rates died and we quit at 04Z.
How bad were the bands? This year 372 QSOs and 72 mults in 10 hrs.
with 3 ops. Last year 462 Qs and 95 mults in 7.3 hrs. with 2 ops.
THAT’s how bad things were.
