Comments:
A big thank you to Wal W8LRL for inviting and hosting me at his 160 meter
superstation in Kearneysville, WV.
The station consists of a combination of long and phased beverages in every
major direction, 8 circle receive array and a rotatable Waller Flag at 200 feet.
The receive antennas are controlled via a switching matrix with hand and foot
controls in the shack. The transmit antenna consists of a single 3/8 wave
vertical with 300 full size radials constructed out of a 200 foot tower. This
impressive antenna farm is spread out on over 60 acres of land ! The radio
consists of a Flex 6700 connected to an Alpha 77Dx amplifier.
I started off running and stayed very busy with rates averaging 100 plus Q/s per
hour for the first 6 hours. Once the run slowed a bit I started to S&P for
ten pointers. I managed to put 175 ten pointers in the log the first night. On
the second night I started working EU much earlier in the evening and managed to
put 187 ten pointers in the log. At times EU stations were louder than US
stations. I also managed to put one JA in the log Saturday morning. I missed ND
for WAS. Amazing conditions to say the least !
It was fun watching the online scoreboard races which kept me motivated and in
the chair. Congrats to all the top scoring US stations !
