Comments:

Contesting is like fishing. It’s fun to be there and participate, and if you
catch a big one, awesome. If not, it’s still fun trying.

So how was the WPX fishing trip?

Got off to a slow start. Pointed to EU, but the fish weren’t biting. Pointed
stateside and got a few nibbles, but still not the best hour. Conditions
improved as evening approached, but a high K index made it tough.

Band-by-band breakdown:

80m: Very noisy. High QRN levels all weekend made copy tough. If you were
running LP, the combination of QRN and QSB was almost impossible. Local
thunderstorms and heavy rain made for a tough night. Sorry if I missed you.

40m: Not as noisy as 80m. Very little EU, but JA activity was strong. The combo
QRN of 80m and 40m was fatiguing. Couldn’t wait to QSY to higher, quieter
bands.

20m: First 24 hours was rough. Second half was better. Saturday night both EU
and JA were runnable. That was fun.

15m: Big surprise. Again, first 24 hours, not very good. Checked the band Sunday
morning and BAM! EU loud and clear. Enjoyed running like I used to when we had
sunspots. Thought the opening might quickly fade, but it went on for hours.

10m: Biggest surprise of all. With EU on 15m, maybe 10m is open? Longshot. Saw
some activity on the Flex display and tuned to a signal. WHAT? EU? Tried running
and immediately worked LZ9W, S53V, and ED7P. It wasn’t a great opening, so I
periodically CQed and caught a few stations, then focused on 15m. Did that for a
number of hours.

My contest ended on Sunday at 19:00z. By then, the EU opening on 10m and 15m was
still going strong. Like fishing, you never know when the big one will bite.

Continent breakdown:

NA – 1,361 (52.5%)
SA – 11 (.4%)
EU – 489 (18.9%)
AS – 636 (24.5%)
OC – 95 (3.7%)

Thanks to all for the Qs.

73, Mitch, K7RL (KW7Y)
