Wow, what a contest. The West coast competition was reminiscent of years past,
and it was super fun. Major thanks to N6MJ, KI6RRN, and K7RL for keeping us all
pushing hard. Congrats to Dan on setting a zone 6 record that may not fall for
a very long time. Awesome!
The bands were much better than I expected. 20 meters was open all night, as
was 15m. A nice QSO with UP2L in the middle of the night was great! Several
UN's and UA9's were in for many hours, up until probably 10z or so. UP2L was
the only one to pull me out. Still...super cool.
Working JA's and a BY on 10 meters was also great fun. Hard to not get stuck
DXing with cool openings like that. No Europe heard in Montana on 10 meters.
I had one run to the USA on SSB that was absolutely fantastic. Turning the
monster N9RV 20m array to the USA really brought them out! With DX conditions
so good, it was hard to justify sacrificing that to just run USA. The DX runs
on SSB were good for about 5 minutes. I was hoping for a big JA and USA run on
40m SSB but I just could not get either to happen. Same with 20m to Europe.
Huge signals, clear frequencies, but no depth. Look at this...a CW guy
complaining about not enough SSB. Ha!
Major thanks to Pat, N9RV, and his wife Rita for the outstanding hospitality and
a socially distanced single op opportunity at the last minute. This was one of
the most fun contests I have done in a while. The 24 hour format is perfect for
a single op.
