Whew, we made it through another contest without 599. Everything seemed to work
okay nonetheless. Except me. I always suffer a loss of self-esteem when I'm
told my signal isn't 599. This is the major issue I have with FT8 signal
reports. That kind of honesty is unnerving and discouraging. I want a gold
star for every QSO.
I remember a comment on ubiquitous 59(9) signal reports in QST many years ago.
If you can't copy a station but want to preserve his or her self-esteem, send a
49(9) or even a 39(9) (just to be safe). That way they won't suffer needlessly
and you have an out when you can't copy them. A humane approach.
