Comments:
The highlight of the contest, for me, was the amazing 10m opening soon after the
start, at 13:20 (6:20 AM PDT). It remained open from the west coast across most
of the states until about 16:20 (9:20 AM PDT), by which time I had over 200 Qs
on 10. Brought back the exciting memories of the "magic of 10 meters"
from years gone by.
Another highlight was that there really wasn't much slow time -- average Q rate
for the 24 hours was just over 65/hour, at the very last hour of the contest--a
tough slog in many contests -- was a respectable 81/hour.
Yet another highlight was working VE3EJ on all six bands.
One of the challenges of the contest was that the main K7RL 130' tower, with the
lion's share of resonant aluminum attached, was stuck east: the rotator was out
of commission. The main impact of this inconvenience was felt in a lower
multiplier count. (We always suffer for multipliers up here in the NW, but I'm
speaking relative to other stations in our region such as VE7CC.)
It's a testimony to the K7RL antennas--and station location on a bluff
overlooking salt water to Europe -- that I was able to work the EU multipliers I
did with misdirected antennas.
Another impact was reduced reach into Asia on the low bands (both 80 and 40
meter yagis are on the main tower stuck east). The lack of rotor was much less
of an issue on 20 and 15 due to the "JA tree" which sports fixed yagis
on those bands.
I tried to chase VE7CC on the Contest Online ScoreBoard, but quickly fell
behind, winding up with significantly-fewer Qs (1548 vs. 1705) and Ms (194 vs.
221, ouch!). It seemed like everywhere I listened I heard VE7CC and the results
showed: a great score of almost 1.3 million. A significant contribution to the
Orca club combined score.
Thanks to Mitch, K7RL, for being able to experience a truly world-class station,
even if handicapped a bit this past weekend.
73, Tony (N7DX)
