My wife asked what I wanted for my birthday, which occurred
during the CQWW CW weekend. I replied, "I REALLY want to win."
She asked what I needed, so I told her that my YCCC receiving
array was not working and I had no luck in troubleshooting it.
So, she bought me a Hi-Z 8 element system. I started installing
it on Monday and finished on Wednesday, giving me a couple
of nights to see that it worked properly. Everything was
new, except the aluminum elements and the cables to the house.
Seemed good to go.
Although conditions didn't seem great the first night, I
certainly heard much better than before. There were a number
of multipliers I heard that I could not work. However, the
second night the antenna became very intermittent. One
moment 3B8M was booming in on 160, the next several minutes
I heard nothing while I frantically turned knobs and flicked
switches. This on-and-off-again behavior continued for the
rest of the contest.
I had replaced all of the coax from the phasing unit to the
antennas, as there were critter teethmarks on some of them.
(They all had good swr from 1 to 50 MHz, tho.) A lot of
help from Lee, K7TJR, helped me narrow down the problem
to finite resistances between the control lines; apparently
the relays were sometimes switched on and sometimes off.
I will be replacing that run of sprinkler cable later in
the week.
I was hoping for more action on 10 meters, like 4 weeks
previously for the SSB weekend, but no joy despite a lot
of monitoring of the band.
