Comments:
Thanks to Dave, K1WHS, for the use of his station and for being a gracious host.
I was sleep deprived entering this contest, especially from operating a lot of
160 in CQWW the weekend before and for the all nighter Wednesday night flying
back from PJ2T through wonderful MIA airport. Thanks to AA I spent an hour
sitting on the tarmac, eventually missing my connecting flight.
My goals for this contest were 1000 Qs √, 100 mults √, and beat the NEDiv
record √. I barely broke the NEDiv LP unassisted record and I doubt it will
stand up to LCRs, but I had fun doing it. I was using the K4D and had the
ability to select multiple beverages in both receivers. I kept the right
receiver on Eu until after Eu sunrise and with the left receiver I was able to
select the other beverages. Many times during a stateside run, I would get an
Eu call me and I was able to easily pick them out with the right receiver. I
should have had more sections, as I missed some usually easy sections like PR,
VE4, NV, and KH6. I also missed a few CA sections, as the west coast was almost
non-existent. The online scoreboard was great, as I kept the score up the
entire contest. I started out in fourth and edged my way up past KG9X, WD0T,
and N9JF. They provided all the motivation to keep my BIC a lot longer than my
body wanted. At one time I had a decent run going and someone (well known and a
friend) jumped on my frequency and started calling CQ. I was quite annoyed and
sent multiple QRL and QSY. He kept going. Then I realized, I had no power out!
For some unknown reason, the K4 stopped transmitting but was generating
sidetone and acting as if it was in TEST mode. I had to reboot the K4 and all
was well after that. Thanks for all the Qs and mults. Hopefully we will see
you in the Big Stew later this month.
