Comments:
Always a pleasure to operate from the expansive Stanford Amateur Radio Club
station in the scenic hills above campus (near where I did my graduate work 40
years ago with the Stanford AI Lab computer music group.)
We had a significant handicap this time, as a recent major “atmospheric
river” wind storm wrecked the 4-element 40 meter Yagi (also damaged the 20m
Yagi.) Still, the 40m inverted-V held its own, at least for a while (more on
that below).
N7MH and I operated rotating 8 hour shifts at his operating position, so each of
us were on all 24 clock hours on one day or the other. The second position was
manned by three newer contesters from the Stanford ARC community. They did a FB
job with major BIC, excellent focus and improving technique as the contest
progressed. (Note to self: recruit for NCCC!)
Band conditions:
10m - Europe was late to open, stayed open for a short time, and was not
runnable. We were also hampered by intermittent wide-band noise, possibly due to
a nearby repeater. Double beaming SA/JA was productive on Sunday afternoon.
15m - Conditions good to Europe and elsewhere else, though not as good as ARRL
DX SSB. It was possible to run EU part of the time the first day.
20m - High noise/absorption during the day, but a decent EU opening later at
night and a US opening in the early morning well before dawn.
40m - As expected, our Achilles heel, given the double points and importance of
JAs to the W. Coast. We were able to hang on until the sun set in YB-land, when
the number of stations CQ'ing doubled, many of whom couldn't hear us. There was
also another noise issue that hampered in-band scanning.
80m - 80m count lower than it might have been, as we favored the 20m opening the
second night. JAs worked on 80: 24 the first night and 6 the second, between
923z and 1217z.
160m - A brief stop to say hello and then get back to business.
Thanks to John W6LD and Mike N7MH for use of their equipment. And congrats to
John on his P40L low power effort.
Thanks also to those who spotted us, particularly ND7K and NR6O. We tried to
return the favor when possible, but had limited scanning ability, due to
above-mentioned in-band issue.
Congrats to WR3Z@N3OC, WC6H and KL7RA for excellent M2 scores (and see my March
2023 NCCC JUG editorial advocating the online scoreboard.)
