Decided to celebrate mothers day on Saturday, So I was just taking the steaks
off the grill when this years sprint started.
Once I had pleased the wife with a full course meal and finished my piece of
apple pie alamode, I made it to the radio just one hour late. I was hoping for a
good band opening on 6 but after looking at the weather map, I was greeted with
lightning crashes pretty much all directions. Call on ssb only netted me 2
contacts for the first 60 minutes of calling in all directions. I tried FT8 but
was having problems decoding any strong signals in the + side. I had no problem
decoding very weak signals coming from the East coast. I gave up on FT8 while I
downloaded the latest FT8 release again and installed it. While back on ssb, I
found K9JK/R up by Chicago and a couple other stations up that way. Very good
signal strength from all so band was in great shape for ssb contacts. So where
is everyone ? Decided to try FT8 again once I got the new one installed. Working
much better now. Decoding everything . I went to MSK 144 and found it to be the
dead zone. So I set up a try with WW2Y. Didn't take long to complete the
contact, then MSK144 was suddenly the place to be with multiple stations all
calling. Made a couple more contacts then moved back to FT8 for a few more.
I still managed to get back to ssb and complete the 4 grids K9JK/R went to and
even found a couple others over by Chicago that were running 6 meters to
vertical antennas. Wow, my 5 element horizontal to vertical whip antennas, How
awesome. The number of contacts doesn't show how much fun I had for the 3 hours
I spent. But since I made no contacts to my own grid square and my closest
contact was over 175 miles away. I think I did pretty good. Thanks to those who
sponsor these sprints and ON4KST web site.
