Comments:
I operate one of those “Limited Antenna” stations. So, rather than spend my
time calling CQ into an abyss of non-response, I once again chose to work
S&P. It’s slow and tedious, but it allows me to set my own goal: chase
those Sections.
And so my hourly QSO rate ranged from 13 at the start of the contest (while
getting used to that exchange mouthful) to 19 Saturday night. Throughout the
contest, my average time between QSOs was 3.8 minutes.
It’s just that SSB does not work as well with my station as CW does. Two weeks
ago in SS CW, I spent only 15 minutes more total time in that contest than I did
in SS SSB but made almost twice as many QSOs (176 SSB vs. 311 CW). Those are
comparatively small numbers but they added a few more to PVRC’s SS SSB score.
My enjoyment was in contacting sparsely-populated corners of North America, plus
hearing the actual voices of friends.
This SS SSB effort certainly didn’t seem to suffer from propagation problems;
I easily worked Alaska (KL7SB, of course) and Hawaii (WH7Z), then Newfoundland
(VO1s BQ and KVT), PEI (VY2TT), British Columbia (VA7RR), plus Caribbean islands
associated with the U.S. (KP4AA, KP2M, KP2B. However I never heard AB (Alberta),
the faraway Canadian TER[ritories], or four of California’s sections (SCV,
SDG, SF and LAX!). And I have no Earthly idea why I was unable to bag NNY, SNJ,
DE, WPA, SFL, LA, MS, and OK. Total Section haul: 71 of the 85.
