Murphy really got me this time! I couldn't hear anything the first
night, then I discovered more than an hour into the contest that I was
listening on my NE beverage! I don't know how I worked 59 Q's. I tried
switching in the beverage later on fairly strong signals and they
disappeared. I must have only worked the 20 over guys! My apologies to
all those who were calling and got CQ'd in the face.
I have had some trouble with RF into my W9XT card, so I tried a MFJ
voice keyer. It worked ok the first day, but developed some feedback
the second day. Luckily I discovered that disconnecting the beverage
box cured the RF in the W9XT card and also got rid of the monitor
birdies.
Saturday was great and Sunday was bad. I was hearing many Europeans in
the noise on Sunday on skew path at 125-135 degrees, but I could only
copy the strongest ones. I could pick out a letter or two on the
others, but no go.
I made a big mistake by not reorienting my NE antenna to VK-ZL. It was
worthless toward Europe and I could not work both JAs and VK-ZL at the
same time. I will fix this before WPX.
