160m...FT1000mp / AL-1200 slow to open but conditions seemed OK the first
night, just not much around to work. Nothing new to work the second night.
80m...FT1000mp / Henry 5-k.....OK to US/carrib, but very little JA or Pac
heard here
40m...FT-1000D / Drake L4-B....worked quite a few EU stations way before
sunset both days, which is a rarity. Good VK/ZL activity otherwise poor to JA
without much luck running.
20m...FT-1000D / Alpha 77dx... reasonably good with lots of Europe all thru
the evening from 0330 UTC to well past 2000. Some decent runs but nowhere near
as good as in ARRL DX. Better JA runs in the morning here than in the
afternoon. Band folded badly Sunday around 1900 and never recovered.
15m...FT-1000mp / Henry 5-k and/or FT 840 / Alpha 87a A real pleasant
surprise to hear over the pole signals (9K2ZZ UN5PR VU2JNA and more) from 0330
Sat to past 1600. Marginal at times in the wee hours here but always at least
one signal audible - usually 9K2ZZ, but for about 30 mins VU2JNA was the only
signal, sometimes to S9!
A different band the next 24 hrs, it closed around 0430 and stayed shut
till 0940 then opened for the next 10 hours to Europe, not always runnable but
that came to crash around 1900 and we only managed a handful of q's after
that.
10m .... FT 840 / Alpha 87a... Sat opened long at 2030 to CE/LU etc and closed
2330, never really opening to the US (no runs). Nothing much on the Sunday,
altho it did open briefly but no new stations noted.
The SW fade on the Sunday, in the 1900 area really knocked the wheels off our
best effort ever, but thankfully it stayed away that long. There were auroral
reports all thru the days leading up to the contest and on Sat as well so it
was surprising that conditions held up as they did, esp on 15m.
A pleasure to have 3 out of province guests with us this year: Dave VE2ZP,
Todd VE5MX and Frank VE7AV. The local weather was great (El Nino seems to be
our friend, so far) and my randomly intermittent power line noises also stayed
away. All rigs and amps behaved well, and while we did not have cluster
available other than in the last hour, TRlog and the network kept everything
linked perfectly. When packet finally did return (one of the nodes has been
down for sometime) thanks to VE6EEI and VE6DXX, it was neat to see the new
features (like the happy face to hilite new mults) in the bandmap.
Not yet sure about any WPX CW plans but that's a long ways off...
