In my experience, 50 or 60 amps should not cause a magnetic/mechanical
problem with proper sized cables. I admit to over-killing things a bit, but
I like #2 welding cable. The run is short so the cost is minimal. It's very
flexible and conforms and seals nicely to firewall grommets. And, as I
mentioned before, a back-up battery-to-ground connection with the same
cable, greatly reduces the possibility of the feared "loss of ground"
scenario.
When the supply is only 12 to 14 volts, it's nice to measure roughly that at
the load, under load.
I find that with my Icom radios, at 100 watts out, using the factory cable
only, I lose about 1.5 volts in the cable with a 13.8 volt supply. Under
continuous duty the fuse holders get noticeably warm to touch when I get
long winded. Pinching the inner fuse clip for a bit tighter grip on the fuse
makes little difference. Does anyone have any comments here? Wouldn't
better regulation make for a cleaner signal?
