To my mind, anything over the 100 watt level can benefit - and quite
possibly, stuff under that too, if it has a lot of capacity and a low
resistance/leakage reactance transformer. Personally, I've used step start on
all my HV
supplies for 30 years - that's those of about 100 watts up - and had very few
problems. I've had electrolytics dry out and lost some 1N4008s, but nothing
built with better diodes.
