It's 'lampe' in French, though - which, certainly in the case of things like
the French R valve, it looked like - in more ways than one with bright
emitter valves. And phosphorous getters.
The English are a pretty mongrel lot - Saxon, Jute, Viking, Celt, Italian,
Norman and a few others all having come here. So you can maybe see why Cornish
etc get upset at being called English, although the minorities never turn up
their noses at getting cash!
At the moment though, Noel Coward seems right - 'Mad dogs and Englishmen go out
in the midday sun'.
