Hi Will,

I use and prefer the calculation type watt meter as an aid in tuning
amplifier input network(s).  One type sold for the amateur market is the
Autek brand. The only drawback is they don't provide a circuit diagram,
should it ever need repair. The meters' sample network is of the Bruene
type and holds up well into practical loads.

I had to reverse engineer the circuit for the diagram and repair of one I
purchased used for $30. New they are over the $100 level. They sell only
direct through QST and similar type magazines.

The feature of this dual meter/display is it allows you to see the
forward and reflected power ratios at the same time.  I find it very
helpful to have both on display during the amplifier adjustment and a
termination type wattmeter/load on the output with a tap for the spectral
display.
The reflected power is displayed on an SWR scale type meter with three
full scale values.

All the standard High Voltage and RF warnings apply...
