I have heard of at least three ALPHA amps that had 8877 broken filaments.
Maybe the 8877s had this problem only during a short period? Maybe this
problem has has not been mentioned by EIMAC in the 8877 data sheet editio=
n
Rich is reading but in an earlier edition? Why not settle this question onc=
e
for all by just asking Reid Brandon at EIMAC? Anyway, to protect your
investment in the very expensive 8877, limit the inrush current just to be
sure. The parts costs is only about the same as a few cigarette packages!

Phil, K5PC, urged limiting heater inrush current on indirectly heated tubes
like the 8877. I also believe, despite that Eimac does not specify limitin=
g
for the 8877, that it is good engineering practice to do so in amateur
service.
I have used Keystone Carbon Company's negative temperature coefficient
thermisters in this application with a very nice, slow ramp up in the
voltage. They are available in many sizes from Digi-Key at little cost but
you have to negotiate their minimum order policy by working it thru their
petty cash or find some friends.
