G'day Jim,

 From what I understand about 3-500Z tubes and the like, the only way 
to getter them is to get them working with colour. Just running the 
filaments will achieve nothing.
Therefore I say, just go for it. Get'em running as they are meant to 
run. As long as you have glitch protection, you shouldn't damage too much.

Of greater concern than the tubes would surely be the powersupply. 
That's the thing I would be switching on, plugging into the wall 
socket, donning earmuffs and eye protection and switching on with a 
broomstick. Ha ha.

The alternative is for you to ship it straight to Perth, Western 
Australia and let me take the risk/s.
