The Nitromors paint stripper Chris mentioned earlier *used* to be
methylene chloride based, but these days in the EU it's not
available to the public and Nitromors has been reformulated with
something much less effective. Chris needs to find a friendly
'professional' furniture restorer who can get it.
It was very many years ago, but last time I used Litz I did the ends by dipping in alcohol and lighting it a few times. A blow torch might do the job as an alternative - but it's still a PITA cleaning it up for soldering afterwards.
