The Collins crew (as represented in Single Sideband Systems and Circuits by
Sabin,Schoenike) say you should use a phase detector (zero center metering)
to detect proper tuning (resistive load) and a ratio detector (e(p)/e(g))
to detect proper load resistance. By using metering of this type, you can
zero out both parameters with any kind of signal (even voice).
As the authors say, this seems to be an ideal technique, especially for
automatic tuning systems. I don't have any personal experience with such a
setup. Surely someone out there (Richard? Tom?) does.
