I am sure the ham radio market will switch to the more modern
interfaces, and be quite happy to sell you another rig/amp or whatever
when the "modern" interface becomes defunct.
That sort of thing would not be tolerated so easily in the professional
market, which is no doubt why professional grade items tend to come with
RS-232, and home items with USB.
If professional items need the bandwidth that RS-232 can't provide, they
will normally use GPIB or ethernet.
