In the case of the Heath manuals, thanks to the Bono Amendment, they are for 95
years. Under the Berne Convention the copyrights are for 75 years. However,
at the "urge" of Sony Pictures, who wanted to keep many of the earlier motion
pictures out of public domain, Congress passed the Bono Ammendment (in honor of
the late Sonny Bono - who was a congressman at the time of his death) which
extended the copyrights an additional 20 years. President William Jefferson
Clinton signed this bill into law in the late 1990s. This extended the
copyrights in the United States and possessions.
