The standard house wiring in the United States consists of a single-phase
center tapped 240 VAC secondary winding on the distribution transformer ("pole
pig"). Depending on the individual system the primary distribution voltage is
usually between 7200 and 7800 volts or 14,400 and 15,600 volts. In some of the
older sections of major cities the primary voltage can run between 4400 and
4800 volts. However, most of the older lower voltage distribution circuits are
being "updated" to the higher voltages.

Just out of curiosity: the pole pig provides twice 120VAC on 2 separate pairs
of wires that connect in series, or some 3 phase configuration?
