Chuck,
You don't say if you were loading the pi network with a 50 ohm load. If so, it 
may be that the resulting Q of the tank (the working Q) is too low for the GDO 
to detect. Although one would expect that if that were the case, the input 
networks shouldn't show a dip. On the other hand, it's arguable that the input 
networks only show a low Q when loaded with the tube input impedance, which of 
course, without the amplifier being driven etc, is high.
So if you had a load connected, try discvonnecting it.
