Hi gentleman,
Most of us have more time than money and lucky ones are retired.
I've worked in the electronics industry and education, and would not think
of spending money on something expensive that I can design and build...
because I have more time than money! So that is why one reason I build my
equipment. I've given myself a year to finish the 833 single band 160 meter
amp that I have been writing about. That is 90 % of the fun! Other Hams
will think otherwise! Learning is the other reason that building is so
much fun.

It is true that the electronics knowledge of the average ham is
dropping because of the testing qualifications are so easy these days. I'm
not complaining, just a known fact. I was first licensed in 1973 (Age was
16) WN8QEZ, WB8QEZ, NS8O, and have been ever since. Building good equipment
can be done with some good research by just about anyone. I always thought
that building and learning were the great things about amateur radio and it
still is. Yes, I contest and CW is my favorite mode. Others like VHF or
Moon bounce, etc.

So lets focus on the positive and help those who are trying to
build power amplifiers.

PS: CQ WW WPX contest this weekend... get out those power
amps! http://www.cqwpx.com/rules.htm
