There are a few hams on the West Coast who have marvelous antennas and
"sufficient" amplifiers that have significant IMD. These hams happen to
have the strongest signals and also have "followers" who are dependent upon
the large signal. If you mention to the "big signal" that he is splattering
or suggest his signal is not clean. You are attacked by his lemmings who,
without any support assert that your receiver is overloaded and you do not
know what you are doing. No matter what you have used, or how careful the
analysis, you are at fault because their fearless leader could not be at
fault because he has the strongest signal into Europe.
I mostly stay silent now because it is not worth the battle. However, when
I tune around and note a signal with very little imd, I appreciate it. I
remember a few years ago, a since deceased ham had a 4CX1500 linear
amplifier and the quality of his signal was stunning. I miss listening to
his signal.
For those who worry about IMD and how to monitor or improve your amplifier
IMD, I salute you.
