Thanks for the clarification Peter, I was using Drake C Line at the time of
the first ones which made rapid QSY's very hard; later a TS-930 made it
easier. A modified NCL-2000 at 600W until I got the mod straightened out and
into a shunt fed tower.
OTOH I was the first from NH and most of the rest of New England and they
were mailing me QSL cards with "green stamps"
One well known JA sent $5 and got a NIL reply, not even close on the call
and I was up on 80 at the time listed.

1907 - 1912 kHz when they first got 160, Carl. I remember getting home
from work one night at about 2130 (in about 1986-7), and they were very
strong. We would transmit down around 1830 - 35: I worked a string of them
and then the usual deliberate QRM started. There are a number of stations
in middle Europe who can't work DX on 160 and so deliberately QRM those
who can - or maybe they can work DX, but don't want anyone else to do so.
Got all the QSLs coming direct with $ bills!
