You are correct that the transformer leads are always hot. One side of the HV winding is always connected and the switch selects the other side of HV secondary or a tap on the HV secondary.

If there are no arc points I will probably look at the PS first.

I dont see how it can be the transformer since all 3 HV leads are always
"hot" and the fuse only blows in SSB.

Something on the PS board could be the problem and all that is easy enough
to test.

Thanks guys for the input.

I looked at the switch and it didn't have any obvious problems but I figured a better inspection is required.

Disconnecting the transformer leads was on my list as well. A new transformer is about $300 unless I can find a used one that still works. It also looks like a bear to get out.

The filter caps are only a couple years old which doesn't guarantee that they are still good of course. I had a Henry 1KD5 years ago that blew a cap within a year. A bit more spectacular than this one. The Henry arced through a 0.25 inch phenolic board among other things and didn't blow a fuse!

Since I had replaced the power supply board I thought maybe there was a wire I didn't get on correctly and when I turned the switch it finally moved enough to short or arc. I didn't see any obvious arc sites or wires out of place which is why I sacrificed another fuse.

Id check the SSB/CW switch carefully for arcing to a metal part. Common
problem with an underated switch.

Subject: [Amps] Clipperton-L question

One day when I switched from CW to SSB mode on my Clipperton-L it blew the fuse with a good bang. The switch picks between a tap and one side of the power transformer secondary – tap being for CW. I forget but for SSB I think the power supply supplies 2500V(+/-) and somewhere around 2000V(+/-) for CW. Nothing obviously wrong that I could see with just the covers off. I replaced the fuse and as soon as I turned the amp on it blew the fuse again. I searched the web to see if someone had seen this problem before and had written about it but I didn’t find anything. I have had the amp since it was new (1984?) but I put a Harbach power supply board in it about 2 years ago. As a long shot I thought I might ask here if anyone had seen a similar problem before I try to troubleshoot this.
