Thanks to all who responded.........I now have a manual and a better
understanding of what I'm dealing with.

Subject: [Amps] Original Ameritron AL-80 question
Hi folks,
I'm new to this list and quite frankly, not much of a technician. I am also
the new owner of an AL-80 amplifier - my first tube-type amp. SO....I guess
I'm asking if one or more of you would be willing to "elmer" me through
getting this thing up and operating without destroying the tube? If so,
here's what I've done so far:
1. I didn't know how long since the unit had been run, so I wiped down the
tube with denatured alcohol to remove any oils, etc. and installed it into
the socket. I turned it on and the plate voltage is 2700V, which I have been
told is what it is supposed to be.
2. I let the amp run in stand-by for 8 hours to de-gas the tube.
3. I ran a 220VAC receptacle to the bench and shifted the jumpers in the
back to allow 220V operation.
4. I re-checked the plate voltage - still 2700V.....must have done that
right........hi hi.
Now come the questions.................
1. I don't understand the "wrap around" scale on the Band Switch. It reads
160-80-40-20-15 from left to right, then on the lower scale, it reads
24-16-10-6.5 in the opposite direction, ending with the 6.5 between 40 and
80????? There are only detents in the switcn for the upper bands & the lower
ones are positioned "in-between" the standard positions. If you go to
www.rigpix.com under POWER AMPLIFIERS, there's a photo of the face of this
unit if that will help clarify.
I'm sure there will be other questions, but I'll stop here for
now..........BTW, no, I don't have the manual.
Thanks,
Butch
