W6PQL tested the NXP BLF188XR, the device he uses in his 1KW amps, and came up with 1100W before hitting 1dB compression and it's a 1400W "peak" device.

If I was building one with the BLF189XR I'd still use two devices. Run each at 750W out and not stress anything. Might actually get an SSPA that will do full legal, any mode, no time limit as long as you can move the heat.

The big question is the low pass filter. The single most expensive part of an SSPA.

This may or may not be good news for amateurs. While the Ampleon press
release touts 1900W peak, that is in *pulse* service which is generally
driven hard into compression/clipping. One would need to look at the
data sheet to check the 1 dB and 0.5 dB compression level to see if it
will handle 1500 W peak before reaching the 0.5 dB (preferably) or 1 dB
(worst case) compression levels.

As it stands, some unscrupulous manufacturer will certainly build a
product around the BLF189XR and probably advertise it as a 2KW PEP
amplifier without concern for the IMD generated just as is the case
with several "1300 W" and "1500 W" solid state amplifiers currently
on the market.

Just came across this news release this morning.

I have 2 very well known tube amps and built a W6PQL SSPA with a pair of
BLF188XR devices after one of the tube amps failed. The home-built
solid-state amp is a keeper and I am seriously looking to parting ways with
my tube amps. Instant on, no lethal HV, tons of gain (minimal drive
requirements) are all significant benefits. A BLF188XR is $185 from RF
Parts.

The SS amp has been running very nicely now for the past 5 months. Only for
RTTY contesting have I needed to revert to a tube amp.

So long as the NXP/Freescale/Ampleon conglomerate pushes the RF envelope
with their LDMOS transistors, we in the amateur community will stand to
benefit. SSPA designs will continue to improve to silence the naysayers.

I did not include the direct link due to security/SPAM concerns.

Just search BLF189XR. Most of the search results will take you to the
Ampleon Press Release.
