Best deal for computer grade caps ? I found T.C.I. caps on E Bay for about
$8.00 each ! They are 220 mfd @ 500 DCWV, 550 surge. They are 105 degree C
caps, about half size of most and have solder tabs. Buy in bulk for even
better price. Have been using them for a couple of years, no failures yet.

Ameritron has a good price on their caps which are 270uF which with 8 is
sufficient for good filtering. The new ones are half the height but still
the computer grade type...about $13 iffn I remember.

I think that's about what I paid about five years ago, and I bought at
least a dozen. Don't recall if it was Newark or Allied, but I shopped
them for price.

Another important point. It's rare for all of the caps in the series
string to fail. Only one gone bad will cause lots of hum. I use my
trusty Simpson 260 on the middle Ohms range to read charge and discharge
current as I reverse the leads, and compare each cap to the others. A
bad one will have a lot less charge and discharge current. I have three
Titans, so I've been through this several times. Only once when I've
replaced one has another one come up bad in the string.

Thanks to KM1H and K0UYA for the advice. The form factor of the stock
caps for the Titan is the killer: very long and very narrow compared to
the "usual" for this capacity and voltage. I'm confident I could make a
safe outboard "capacitor box" bolted to the side of the current PS to
allow more available/affordable capacitors, but I have to weigh all the
factors, and $29 each at Newark may be a better choice. I don't know if
270uf/8 is sufficient vs 400uf/8 for an amp that can put out 1.5kw with
the figurative pinky finger of one hand. So I'm sure I want to stay with
400uf per capacitor, while also paying close attention to temperature
and rated life specs, ESR, etc. This is why I asked about a better deal
for *the specific Mallory (CD) capacitors* before exploring unknown
territory.
The Digikey price for these caps is $46 each, if they had them in stock,
which they don't. Mouser does have 15 in stock at $81 each. Other
suppliers I've found all over the planet have prices around $35 or more.
Anyway, I wanted to make sure there isn't a golden supplier hiding out.
Regards,
Pete AD4L

Les, Is there anything in the tank circuit that could be breaking down?
And do you have big diodes from B- to chassis at the power supply. My
understanding is the purpose of them is to prevent damage to your meters in
the case of a Plate (or B+) to chassis short. You should also have a 20-50
ohm resistor for fault current limiting in the B+ lead, right at the filter
caps. With these items, a fault is not supposed to take out the metering,
just blow the primary fuse (till you find where the fault is occurring).
I say this, because I have recently had similar things happening to
me..........

The tube is likely OK but the hardware needs a good examination and
cleaning...all the way from the tube to the N connector and dont dismiss
relays or coax.
Is this being tested on a dummy load?
