Nobody is saying toroids won't work, but they do require some careful
engineering and especially testing to be sure they are rugged enough.
Air core coils are much more forgiving.
Toroids are great when space is limited. Most commercial amp makers
have a design requirement for small cabinets, driven by market
demands. Fortunately, homebrewers have no such limitation unless they
choose to impose it upon themselves.
