I strongly take issue with your criticism of the dedicated ARRL appointees
who valiantly manned the /125 effort the past 10 days. In fact, I feel like
I learned some valuable operating tips from the EC's I heard on the air.
These guys generated the largest pile-ups of any of the operators, so there's
an obvious edge in their technique of pile-up management. In fact, I am
planning on using these techniques in CQWW. Just imagine:
ME--> "QRZ?"
<now follows 5 minutes of a giagantic pileup
screaming their call repeatedly>
ME--> "OK, OK! Standby! I'm listening for a BRAVO TANGO"
HE<-- "Alpha Alpha Five Bravo Tango"
ME--> "OK, AA5BT go ahead."
HE<-- "Five Nine...Four."
ME--> "Roger, AA5BT. You're 59. Do you have all of my
information?"
HE<-- "Not really."
ME--> "Oh, OK. Well, I'm in Zone 3."
HE<-- "Thanks and 73."
ME--> "All right, stand by. I'm now listening for ...."
See the trick? I don't have to listen to the pile scream again, 'cause
I've got a nice long list I made that I can "stand by for".
Like I said, these guys had the biggest piles. How else could you ever get
such a pile going from the rare country of North Texas???

Okay K3EST, KR2Q, K1AR and all you other CQWW log checkers out there, I want
to know exactly what you are going to enforce for M/S for CQWW 1994:
1) You begin on the "new" band when you make your first QSO on the new band.
OR
2) You have a flexible 10 minute window, that may begin just after your last
QSO on the previous band, or it may begin when you make your first QSO on the
new band.
Please make it perfectly clear, so we are all playing by the same rules this
year.

A reality check MAY be in order here.
I speak for myself and my poor e-mail "in-box"....
The HPM celebration was NOT a contest (despite what some called it on the
air).
The logical conclusion then is: Contest techniques do not apply.
It was an operating event held over several days - why rush thru the
pileups?
No guidelines were given except to exchange signal report and ARRL
appointment,
there was no CONTEST announcement - just an "Announcement of the
"celebration".
Give these ops a break - I for one never expected the pileups - and they may
not have either. In any case, it was NOT a contest NOR an emergency
preparation. It was NOT an event designed to train anyone for either type of
event. Lighten up guys.
