Hello Dennis
I agree with many of the comments made in the answers to
this question. In the case of a DXPedition the classic
method is to go split. Using a specific freq (up 5) to listen
is often helpful, because the guys in the pileup can then
hear the DX station in the clear. I personally hate the
idea of spreading out (14200 to 14220) as it impacts on too
many users of the band.

In the case of contesting, going split is usually done for
band plan reasons - not for pileup reasons.

This means that it is best to work the big guns first.
It is frustrating to everyone, if you try to dig out someone
at S5 when he is being smothered by a S9++ station. The quickest
way to clear a strong station is to work him first.
If you are having trouble hearing callsigns in a pileup, try
turning down the RF gain, or turning off the AGC.

On 10m I have a short window to W1/VE1. So I will often call
for Ones Only - this is also done if I am missing some W1
multipliers.

There is no reason to call QRZ. I think that it should have no
part in a phone contest. The best way to acknowledge the last
contact, and tell the pileup you are ready for the next one is
to say "Thanks, ZL1ANJ". If there is no reply press F1
for a short CQ.

Cheers
