Hi Mike,
from the little pistol perspective, possibly shared by others in this league: In bad condx and experiencing many difficult QSOs before one may switch to "repeating callsign". Being blessed with a lowwire, 5 W and a call having 13 dits with 6 at the end (even with a slowed down S) the standard QSO then regularly is

Running station..... "CQ"
DL8MBS
Running station DL?
DL8MBS then tiny pause to hear whether copied instantly and if not quickly adding DL8MBS again
Running station DL8M?
DL8MBS DL8MBS

or similar sequences for a then unhappy overtime

Long story short: It regularly proves more time efficent to send the call twice initially to give the running station a better chance to adapt for an expected difficult copy.
YMMV
73, Chris, DL8MBS
