Closest thing I can liken radio contesting to is competitive fishing or fishing derbies. You are in the same pond or lake or stretch of ocean, but beyond that you pretty much get your choice of stuff. You can fish where ever you want (within the extent of the rules), you can use your choice of rods and reels (within the extent of the rules), you can use what ever type of boat you want (within the extent of the rules), and you have a fixed window of time to do what you can. After that, its much about your skill as a fisherman to know where to go and when to move from that spot, your luck in hitting a good pile of fish, and your ability to land big ones.
